I suffer from a bad case of social anxiety, even though, as all people with social anxiety know, we are masters at hiding it.
I cannot put into words how impressed I am by what you have done Martin. I have been a follower on your site for a long time. Watching your vision of becoming a full time, working wood turner transform into something quite extraordinary has to be inspirational to all of us in the wood turning community worldwide.
The coupling of wood turning as a form of therapy to tame our “inner demons,” as you call them, is extremely touching: I have watched as you unashamedly talk about your struggles with depression and anxiety.
So, I will jump in and also state that wood turning has had the same effect upon me. I suffer from a bad case of social anxiety, even though, as all people with social anxiety know, we are masters at hiding it. I am unable to work as a woodworking teacher anymore, due to my condition. I have suffered through periods of depression due to my condition; However, the hidden blessing was I was cut loose to spend everyday in my workshop turning. I continue to learn and have absolutely benefited from the focus required by turning to still my mind.
I often take breaks, stop, sit down and meditate (a simple practice of mindfulness – a stilling of the mind through concentration), as turning can be very stressful at certain points during projects where extreme concentration is needed that, inevitably, leads to muscle tension. Nothing can beat meditating in a room full of the smell of wood! I also do stretching exercises throughout the day to help with the muscle tension that comes with anxiety. I recently discovered that David Ellsworth incorporates stretching in his classes.
Martin you are a natural in front of the camera and I eagerly look forward to the weeks and months ahead to see what unfolds for you. Oh, by the way, I am glad you went with Nova products. I am a Nova fan and have a DVR 3000 with all the bells and whistles. I am, however, green with envy at the sight of you Galaxy:)
Wishing you the very best. You are doing something very meaningful. Anyone who can find such work is indeed a fortunate person.
